Formal hose are traditionally made of silk. Some are plain, others have muted or exciting conservative designs. The overarching rule is that they must be black. At times, in tropical settings, white has been seen but it is of Sea Island cotton, not silk.

The most traditional conservative design is the tonal side panel. A simple curving vertical panel is seamlessly woven into the side of the hose for a subtle design effect. At more modern cultural events such as awards shows like the Oscars or national beauty pageants a more exciting design is called for. All top-quality luxury socks should be laundered in cold water and dried without heat for the best longevity. A dryer is acceptable if used on the no-heat "fluff" setting.
